May Music Update

In the month of May the two and three year old children will learn songs about insects, like ladybugs and butterflies. We will listen and identify the sound of bees and imitate them vocally and learn a song about honeybees. The children will be playing scrapers and will be using these instruments to accent the beat of songs and music.

The four year olds in our preschool classes have been studying fascinating facts about metamorphosis. During our music sessions the children will also be learning about insects and their life cycle through songs and music. We will continue to work with the musical concepts we have learned so far such as high/low, fast/slow, and quiet/loud through a song about fireflies. Through the exploration of different sized cymbals the children will learn how the size of these instruments determine the volume of the sound.

The junior kindergarten classes will learn about the full orchestra. The children will learn to listen to and appreciate orchestral music as individual families of instruments playing simultaneously. They will identify the different instrument families (stringed, woodwinds, brass, and percussion families.) They will listen to Britten, Introduction to the Orchestra, while looking at a picture of the full orchestra and pointing to the family of instruments that is playing. We will continue working on rhythmic and melodic reading of songs we have learned with c, a and f notes, like Butterfly Flutter By and Who’s that Tapping at the Window.
